About the Score. Composer Justin Hurwitz crafts a captivating fusion of classic jazz standards and original compositions, creating a score that flows more like a cinematic experience than a conventional jazz album. The musical pieces are designed to intensify in response to the escalating tension in the narrative’s teacher/ student relationship. The score for WHIPLASH was meticulously produced note by note, allowing for intricate layering and manipulation that is not typically achievable. Most of the notes are slowed to approximately one-third of their original tempo, resulting in a nightmarish interpretation of a Buddy Rich big band sound. It is noteworthy that the collaboration between Hurwitz and the film’s director, Damien Chazelle, is distinctive, as they have exclusively worked together on five features, with each film offering a fresh and unique soundtrack.
